Wish-ly

A birthday page for your dad

Dads are famously impossible to buy for and famously bad at saying they liked something. He will not say much about this either. He will keep the link.

What to put on it

The music he raised you on

Whatever was playing in the car on every long drive. Putting it behind the page does more work than any message you could write over it.

A photo of him at your age

Dig one out. Put it next to a recent photo of you. He will notice the resemblance before he reads a single word.

Say the thing your family does not say

Plenty of families do not do this out loud. Writing it down is easier, and it counts exactly the same.

What to write

Steal any of these, or use one as a way in and finish it yourself.

I have started saying things you used to say, and I have made my peace with it. Happy birthday, Dad.
Thank you for the long drives, the bad jokes and the fact that you never once made it look hard.
You taught me most of what I know by not making a speech about any of it.

Questions about making one for your dad

My dad never reacts to gifts. Is there any point?

The men who react least to gifts are usually the ones who keep them. You are unlikely to get a speech back. You are quite likely to find he has shown it to someone.

Can I put the music he actually likes behind it?

Yes, and it does more work than the writing. Whatever was playing on every long drive will reach him faster than a paragraph, because he has thirty years of associations with it and none with your sentence.

We are not a family that says this sort of thing out loud.

Plenty are not. Writing it down sidesteps the whole problem — nobody has to hold eye contact, and it counts exactly the same.

How it works

  1. Add their name, your photos and your message. A live preview shows exactly what they will see.
  2. Send the wish link to everyone else so they can leave a short video or a note. You approve each one before it appears.
  3. Publish, and share the private link whenever you like. GH₵ 150 once, no subscription.
